Day 9: Soup

That handsome man on the steps is the one and only Colin Firth AKA Mr. Darcy, who is sitting next to his co-star Emily Blunt. They're making a movie in Raleigh and were filming across the street from the Man's office. Since he knows I'm awfully fond of CF, he played the paparazzi for me and got this shot. Fun!

I made broccoli soup today, and it was good. The recipe called for light cream and nutmeg and swiss cheese. The nutmeg was an especially nice touch. I find myself throwing nutmeg and cinnamon into all kinds of things for a little kick. It's especially nice in the fall.

I'm not from a soup family, are you? My mother took a Chinese cooking class in the 70's and a French cooking class as well, so we occasionally had won ton soup or French onion soup, but my guess is my dad discouraged it. He definitely wasn't a soup guy. When my brothers and I were home on snowy days, my mom made Campbell's Tomato Soup, and when we were sick, we were served Campbell's Chicken and Noodle, or my favorite, Campbell's Chicken and Stars. What's the difference? Who knows, but the stars made me happy.

It wasn't until my roommate in grad school made me homemade chicken soup from scratch that I realized soup was something you could get excited about. That it could be a whole meal by itself. That it didn't have to be super salty, which canned soups almost always are.

Recently the fall weather has made me want to eat more soup; also, the glut of junky food that comes with Halloween and Will's birthday. Last week our house filled up with candy and cake and other junk, and although I tried to stay away as much as possible, I'm only human. So this week I felt an overwhelming desire to eat light. Not fat-free or low cal, but light--food that doesn't take up too much space, food that fills you up but doesn't have any aftershocks, the way that heavy and sugary things do.

So soup it is, and soup it will be. Soup is good, and soup is enough. Do you like soup, too? What's your favorite kind? When do you like to eat it? What's the best month for soup? Could it be November, or is February better?

I have a bunch of broccoli sitting on my counter just waiting to be turned into soup. Yum! Campbells was pretty much the way we rolled growing up, too. Lately we have been enjoying chicken noodle with a peanut butter bagel. Grilled cheese is my go with for tomato soup. Oh, I made spicy black bean soup on Tues. night and had that with salad and some fruit. It sure hits the spot when it is cold outside.

I love soup! I had two kinds in the works on the stove today. My favorite are pea soup with big pieces of pork sausage in it, or a spicy sweet potato soup. Mmmm, I'm feeling hungry now.

Colin Firth and Emily Blunt right there. Together. I could swoon. I love them both! Your Man is a wonderful sort for realising a photo would be so valued by you (and me!).

I come from a tinned soup family. Very disappointing because homemade soup is very exciting. In my own home we are soup people. Potato & Leek, Chinese Chicken & Corn, Chicken & Dumpling, Chicken Noodle, Minestrone. You name it we'll try it and most likely enjoy it. My personal favourite is Pumpkin & Sweet Potato. It always tastes best with homemade wholemeal bread rolls and real butter. There is a recipe on my sidebar for the soup.

The best time? Any ol' time except the height of summer. Hmmmm...I have a butternut pumpkin....

Which reminds me, thanks, that as well as finding the sapre duvet I also have to make a pot of chilli squash soup before tomorrow. And Beef and Guinness casserole. Agh! We're having bangers and mash for dinner tonight- that's the suns' idea of Autumn comfort food. Nearly had a mutiny last night when I served them pasta and sauce having promised bangers and mash. What can you do? Colin Firth in town- impressive!

I love soup...this time of year I often make a minestrone type soup without the noodles, it's low carb so it works perfect for me!

I do like soup VERY much. My mom did not make soup suppers for us, just canned soup for lunch.
Wouldn't a homemade creamy corn chowder taste yummy?
We had a lot of clam chowder in Maine and it was delicious.
The other day I had canned corn chowder (with chicken) for breakfast and I felt strong all morning!
Thanks for the photo of CF. I like him, too!

How wonderful of DH to take that photo of our beloved Mr. Darcy!

Soup is the best! I grew up with yummy, simple homemade soup. Unfortunately, one kid really doesn't enjoy soup in our family which has limited my soup making. Canned tomato (made with milke) and grilled cheese is still a favorite comfort food. I love to order soups at nice restaurants. I will eat and enjoy all soup except for chowders and cold soups. I don't get cold soups.

Soup? Who can think of soup when darling Mr. Darcy is right there sitting on stone steps not too far from where you live?

If I must choose, my favorite soup is French Onion. I also love potato soup and homemade chicken noodle is so very comforting. Lately, my family has been enjoying soups with a Mexican flair: white chicken chili, chicken tortilla soup with torrilla chips crunched up on top. My husband thinks a good bowl of tomato chili can't be beat.

I would eat any soup with Mr. Darcy. I'd lap it all up while soaking in all his loveliness. It would be the best soup ever if I was eating it across the table from CF. I wouldn't even need bread or crachers if I was having soup with Mr. Darcy.

I just made broccoli cheese soup tonight for supper. Oh delish! I came from a canned soup family too, but nowadays I make our soups. So many good ones that don't take forever to make. I love that.

Soup.... particularly in winter months. I especially like a chowder that I make with corn, potatoes, white beans, onions, thyme and whatever else I have. Oh, maybe a bit of bacon too.
